Stabilization

Stabilization is the first phase of healing from divorce, and it’s the foundation everything else is built on. Before you can survive the process or thrive beyond it, you need reliable ways to bring yourself down off the emotional roller coaster, so a bad night alone or a cruel text from her doesn’t wreck your whole week.
This is nervous system work, not willpower work. When you’re in the thick of divorce, your brain treats the loss as a threat to your survival, and that keeps you stuck in fight or flight, where it’s hard to access the calm, rational part of your brain. Stabilization is the practice of teaching your nervous system, through repetition, that you are safe right now. Not through a single pep talk or one good day, but through consistent, deliberate practice: breath work, physical grounding, learning to notice what’s actually true in your body in this moment.
Most men can build real stability here within about 30 days of consistent practice. That’s not overnight, and it’s not meant to be. But it’s also not as far away as it feels when you’re in the middle of it. One month from today, things can genuinely feel more stable. This phase matters because it’s what everything after it depends on. You can’t make good decisions about custody and finances from a place of panic. You can’t be present with your kids while you’re still on the emotional roller coaster. Stabilization comes first because it has to. Once you have it, surviving the divorce itself, and eventually thriving beyond it, become possible in a way they simply aren’t right now.
